What is the Internet of Things?

There plenty of definitions of the Internet of Things. It is said that the Internet of Things as a single network connecting the real world objects and virtual objects surrounding us.

IoT is the concept of a space in which everything from the analog and digital worlds can be combined – this will redefine our relationships with objects, as well as the properties and essence of the objects themselves.

According to the main point of view of IoT, “things” are: any real or virtual objects that exist and move in space and time and can be uniquely determined.

So the Internet of Things is not just a huge number of different devices and sensors, connected together by the wireless channels to the Internet, this is a closer integration of the real and virtual worlds in which communication is done between people and devices.

  • In 1926, Nikola Tesla, in an interview for Collier’s magazine, said that in the future the radio will be transformed into a “big brain”, all things will become part of a single whole, and the tools that make this possible will easily fit in your pocket.
  • In 1990, a graduate of MIT, one of the fathers of the TCP / IP protocol, John Romki created the world’s first Internet-thing. He connected his toaster to the network.
  • The term “Internet of Things” was proposed by Kevin Ashton in 1999. In the same year, the Center for Automatic Identification (Auto-ID Center), engaged in radio frequency identification (RFID) and sensory technologies, was created, thanks to which this concept was widely used.
  • In 2008-2009 there was a transition from the “Internet of people” to the “Internet of things”, i.e. The number of items connected to the network exceeded the number of people.

Our future with the Internet of Things

IoT is shifting significantly the world we live in, beginning with the way we drive to how we make purchases and even how we consume energy for our homes.

This includes everything from your phones, fridges, washing machines to almost everything that you can think of.

With the Internet of Things, we can have not only smart homes but even smart cities with optimized traffic system with no traffic jams, efficient waste management, and energy use.

How It Works: Internet of Things

Basically, IoT is a massive network of connected machines or tools, each of which is interacting and sharing data about their usage, and the environment in which they are operating. This smart interaction of things will cause their learning from the experience of other devices, just as humans do.

Internet of Things is trying to expand the Interdependence in human, that is, Interact, contribute and collaborate with things, this is all about IoT.

Complex sensors and chips are set in the physical objects that surround us.

Each transmitting valuable data, data that lets us better understand how these things work and work together. But how exactly do all these devices share such large quantities of data and how do we put that information to work.

Whether we’re improving the production of a factory, giving city residents real-time updates on where to park a car or monitoring our personal health. It’s the common Internet of things platform that brings us divorce information together and provides the common language for the devices and app to communicate with each other.

The main characteristics of the Internet of Things:

  • This is a permanent attribute of everyday human actions.
  • Everything happens transparently with an orientation to the result.
  • Human indicates the result, but not the process of how to achieve it.

You say, fiction? No, this is the near future, but to achieve such results much more needs to be done.

How to achieve this?

1. A single center

It is logical that in the center of all these things should not be a person, but some device that will transfer the program to achieve the goal. It will monitor other devices and tasks, and collect data. This device should be in every home, office and other places. They will be united by a single network through which they will exchange data and help a person in any place.

We already see the beginnings of such a center. Amazon Echo, Google Home, and Apple, too, is working on something similar. Such systems can already act as the center of a smart home, although their capabilities are still limited.

2. Uniform standards

This will, perhaps, be the main obstacle to the global Internet of things. A large-scale system requires a single language. Over their ecosystem, Apple, Google, and Microsoft are now working. But they all move separately, in different directions, and therefore, at best, we will get local systems that are difficult to unite even at the city level.

Perhaps some of the systems will become a standard, or each network will remain local and will not grow into something global.

3. Security

Naturally, when developing such a system, it is necessary to take care of data protection. If the network is hacked by a hacker, he will know absolutely everything about you. Smart things will hand you over to intruders with guts, so encryption of data should be seriously worked. Of course, they are working on this right now, but periodically emerging scandals say that to an ideal security is still far away.

What awaits us in the near future

In the near future, smart houses await us. They will open the doors for owners themselves when approaching, maintain a comfortable microclimate, replenish the refrigerator on their own and order the necessary medicines if the person falls ill. And before this, the house will receive the figures from the smart bracelet and will send them to the doctor. On the roads will ride driverless vehicles, and it will be no more traffic jams. The Internet of Things will allow developing a more advanced traffic control system, which can prevent the appearance of congestion on the roads.

Already, many gadgets work in conjunction with various systems, but in the next 5-10 years, we are waiting for a real boom in the development of the Internet of Things. That’s only in the future, a layout is possible as in the cartoon “Wally”, where humanity has become a helpless fat man, serviced by robots. So a prospect. And what do you think?
